A38 accident: Two driven to hospital with ‘potentially serious’ injuries with roadway still blocked

Two injured have been taken to hospital after a ‘serious’ crash along the A38 this afternoon (December 30).

Around 4.20pm, Devon and Cornwall police received reports of a two-car collision on the A38 at Haldon Hill, near the Winning Post garage on the Exeter-bound lane.

Fire and ambulance have both been at the scene of the accident, which left four people trapped.

In an update tonight, a spokesman for the police said: “Two injured have traveled to the hospital where serious injuries are unknown at present.

“They are potentially serious.

“The barrier is still in place, the road is expected to remain closed for some time.”

According to the fire department, units from Bovey Tracey, Danes Castle and Middlemoor all attended.

“Fire management received several calls regarding a road traffic collision on the A38,” read a fire statement.

“This was a two-vehicle RTC in which four casualties were trapped. Crews stabilized both vehicles.

“One adult injured was removed from one vehicle and one adult and two children were released from the other vehicle.

“Crews used hydraulic rescue equipment, lighting and small tools. Police and ambulance also participated.”

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area while some cars stuck in queues have been turned around and diverted by police.

The Inrix Traffic Reporting Service states: “A38 eastbound closed, slow traffic due to multiple vehicle accidents from B3344 (Chudleigh / Kingsteignton Turn Off, Chudleigh) to A38 (Racecourse Junction, Clapham).

The road is closed to traffic, trapped in the process of being reversed. “
