Aston Villa ‘wait’ for the outcome of negotiations between Napoli and Manchester United over Axel Tuanzebe.
It says transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who on Thursday reports that Napoli have spoken to United about a potential loan or permanent purchase of Tuanzebe.
Tuanzebe is rented out in Villa, but has hardly been able to get a match under Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard’s predecessor, Dean Smith, brought Tuanzebe back to the Villa for a third rental stay this summer, two years after his most recent stay in Second City.
However, since Smith’s departure in early November, Tuanzebe has been unable to get a kick out and has been limited to just eight minutes since playing the full 90 against Southampton on 5 November.
It was Smith’s last battle with responsibility, and it looked like Gerrard could have considered Tuanzebe as a potential defensive midfielder after a two-minute comeo in the position against Norwich City earlier this month.
Morgan Sanson’s outstanding performance against Chelsea on Christmas Day 2 and reports claiming that Gerrard has been given the green light to sign a new midfielder who has put an end to the short-lived experiment.
So Tuanzebe faces another six months on the sidelines behind first-choice center-backs Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings or leaves Villa Park to play first-team football somewhere.
Villa will have to give the green light for a Tuanzebe exit and it is highly unlikely that they will stand in the way of the 24-year-old.

United would like him to play regular football too, after signing a new deal at Old Trafford before returning to Villa.
Villa have a center defense problem on the horizon if Tuanzebe leaves, with Kortney Hause Mings and Konsa backing up.
Hause is a more than capable Premier League player, but he is without a contract this summer and Villa risk losing him for free.
