Como OSHClub childcare service fined after a four-year-old girl was left alone at the Perth Zoo

A child care service has been fined $ 20,000 after leaving a four-year-old girl alone at Perth Zoo.

The girl was on an outing with Como OSHClub when she was left at an exhibition around noon. 13.50 on 27 January.

She was unattended for up to 25 minutes and was found by a member of the public near the meerkat exhibit, the state administrative court said in a ruling this month.

A total of 44 children and six educators were on the excursion.

The children wore yellow bracelets, which had the cell phone number for the service, and a colorful vest.

“The child’s absence had not been noticed until a member of the public called,” the SAT said.

“The educator leading the group of children did not make a personal count before the children entered the meerkat exhibit or when they left.”

The SAT found that the childcare service did not ensure that all children were adequately supervised while in their care.

In addition to the fine, the service was also ordered to pay $ 2,000 in costs to the Department of Communities.

It was noted that OSHClub took immediate action after the incident, including an investigation and implementation of remedial measures such as new procedures around excursions, a review of supervision risk assessments and further staff training.

“It is recognized that key policies, processes and training were in place for the educators involved to support the monitoring of children at the time of the incident, but these were not complied with,” the SAT said.

“OSHClub subsequently took disciplinary action against relevant staff and implemented additional staff training.”
