Patti Newton shares heartbreaking new post on Instagram after first Christmas without Bert

Patti Newton has opened up about her “heartache” after spending her first Christmas without deceased husband Bert Newton.

The Australian entertainment icon died on October 30, aged 83, and said goodbye at a state funeral in November.

In a new post on social media, Patti posted a picture of Bert hugging their grandchildren, the four children of the couple’s daughter Lauren and her former Olympic husband Matt Welsh.

“The love that has been shown to Bert, from messages, thousands of cards, letters has been overwhelming,” the 76-year-old caption wrote on Snap on Instagram on Wednesday.

“We just want to say, ‘Thank you,'” she wrote on behalf of her extended family.

“The empty hole and the heartache I feel is huge, I think I just loved him too much.

“Thanks again, he would be so excited.”

Bert was fired at a star-studded state funeral in Melbourne in November.

High-profile members of the Australian entertainment industry were present as well as politicians, including Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews and Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
