The retail chain The Body Shop is taking a radical new approach, ‘open employment’, to get new staff

The popular retail chain The Body Shop has a radical approach to hiring staff through something called open hiring.

It is aimed at people facing barriers to getting a job, and several Australian companies are considering this new approach.

Tenille Furze has spent the last few years caring for her autistic brother, which has made it difficult to get another job until now.

“It makes me feel really empowered that companies care enough about me and my challenges to overlook some of the criteria they ask other people,” Ms Furze said. A Current Affair.

“The opportunity is based on people’s potential and not their history,” said Michelle Nolan of The Body Shop.

The Body Shop is responsible for the new approach to job creation.

The global cosmetics and skin care company has dropped the typical way of finding staff, and instead encouraged absolutely everyone to apply for a retail sales position.

“The idea is that we provide an opportunity for people who may not have traditionally had an employment opportunity,” Ms Nolan said.

Typically, even entry-level positions require some form of previous experience, qualifications, or skills.

Ms Nolan from The Body Shop said that if you are willing to learn, the job is yours.

“We have a number of interest groups that we are interested in providing special opportunities and they are natives, homeless, young carers and single parents,” Ms Nolan said.

Mrs. Furze, a newly graduated high school, is just one of thousands of young people who take care of a family member.

She heard about the open employment program through the charity Little Dreamers, which helps families of young caregivers have a better quality of life.

She is now hitting the sales floor in Sydney on a relaxed basis.

“I got a call from the head of state a few weeks later and she said, ‘Do I want a job?’ And I said, ‘Of course I would,'” Mrs Furze said.

Instead of a lengthy interview process, it’s incredibly straightforward.

You are simply asked if you are legally entitled to work in Australia, can lift 11 kg, can work up to eight hours, and if you are happy working with clients.

If you check these boxes, you may be hired.

“It’s been really, really well received. So for a number of people who have traditionally not been able to find employment, they’ve found this a very refreshing way to actually secure employment, without a process, without a CV, based on potential, “said Ms Nolan.

The Body Shop first launched its open employment policy abroad after seeing the success of a similar program at a factory in New York, where staff from all walks of life make and bake delicious brownies that go to the famous Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.

“An organization called Greyston Bakery, they were actually interested in making sure people in the community got jobs,” Ms. Nolan said.

“(It’s) a first job for me, so I did not need any previous experience. Clearly, more companies should take on board what The Body Shop does,” Ms Havelasis said.

Hundreds of Australians have already been hired this way and The Body Shop is now in talks with other employers interested in the concept of combating a shortage of skills in the job market.

“We are very passionate about it and we would love to spread the word to other organizations about the impact a program like this could have,” Ms Nolan said.

“It’s made a huge difference for us with the type of people we’ve hired, and I think we’ve made a difference in people’s lives.”

The Body Shop has donated more than $ 50,000 of its Christmas sales to Little Dreamer’s charity.
