2021 in Cartoon by Ken Pyne

I could use the same words about 2021 as I did around 2020 as nothing seems to have changed in two years where no one goes anywhere or does anything but stay home and drink more when the pubs are closed while they watch TV and are scared. by the government, Chris Whitty and Kay Burley.

The plus has been that the locals in Hampstead Village, where I live, have all gotten to know each other even better – as in lockdowns they were the only people we met.

I would also like to highlight the praise for most of the pubs, which retain a great sense of community spirit (within limits), and I would like to highlight Jimmy McGrath, the landlord of William IV, who deserves a knighthood for services to Hampstead.

It is also good news that there is a revival of pubs where, among other things, the old polar bear and the Magdala in the area reopen.

It’s a good sign of a return to normalcy, and I just hope no more lockdowns ruin that sense of hope.

I also hope 2022 is a better year than the last two, but I’m starting to think it’s wishful thinking and the best I can hope for is since the virus will never go away we will all find a way to live with it on (which we will have to eventually), and some people will stop being so terrified and screaming that they are going to die every time you get within twenty feet of them. But then it is not much different than what almost everyone else wants, I expect.

As for the future – and purely comic book creators’ point of view – I hope Boris Johnson survives as he is so easy to draw. You can almost blindfold him now. I can not think of an interesting face that will succeed him.

I hope everyone who lives in North London buys Ham & High and starts using shops (especially locals) again. And I hope the Camden Council, for the first time in decades, begins to show that it cares about the people who live in the borough, and stops behaving like Stalinists from tinpot – again, wishful thinking, I suppose.

At least happy new year.

Ken Pyne is a cartoonist for Ham & High and Private Eye, among others.
