Dramatic moment, the driver crashes on the Aston Expressway at Spaghetti Junction and ‘escapes from the scene’

This is the dramatic moment when a driver has an accident with his car on one of Birmingham’s busiest roads – and then reportedly flees the scene.

The incident took place on the A38 (M) Aston Expressway on its way out of town towards Erdington shortly before 3.30pm on Thursday 30 December.

A motorist caught the moment on the dashcam when a Honda Covic crashed into the central reservation, causing a 720-degree spin. The driver then allegedly fled the scene of the accident near the famous Spaghetti Junction.

The Honda had lost control in the turn just before the A38 split, with one road heading into the center of Erdington and the other continuing towards Tyburn and then Minworth at Sutton Coldfield.

The car smashed into the central reserve and then turned around twice, spreading debris across the road. The Honda then stops under one of the huge concrete pillars that hold one of the M6 ‚Äč‚Äčlanes en route to Birmingham.

An eyewitness told BirminghamLive: “I was wondering if the driver was okay and was so much surprised when he ran off. I can only guess at his reasons but he obviously would not be with when the police arrived.

“The driver was a guy in a suit and a white shirt with an open neck, with an already existing scar on his face. He got out of the car, jumped over the central barrier and ran off.”

The witness continued: “He did not appear to be injured. However, the front of the car was damaged.

“We waited to talk to the police.”

The accident caused delays on the A38 (M) Aston Expressway out of town for about two hours until the road was cleared shortly before 5.30pm.

West Midlands Police are being contacted for comment.
