Father in Ohio shoots daughter fatally at 16; confused her with uninvited guest: the police

An Ohio father mistaken his 16-year-old daughter for an uninvited guest early Wednesday and shot her deadly inside the garage of his Columbus home, police said.

The girl’s mother told reporters about the accident that happened after the home security alarm went off, police said.

Columbus Dispatch received the hectic, eight-minute 911 call. The newspaper reported that both parents could be heard urging the girl to wake up. The victim was identified as Janae Hairston, a junior at Canal Winchester High School.

She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. The shooting is still under investigation and no charges have been filed. The school announced that resource managers have been made available to students.

“These kids have such a bright future ahead of them,” said Tim Becker, Columbus’ deputy chief of police, according to ABC 6. “Getting deprived of it too soon is extra tragic.”
