Transfer news: Manchester United are aiming for Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez in the midst of Chelsea’s interest
According to TEAMtalk (h / t ESPN), Manchester United have identified Anderlecht’s left-back Sergio Gomez as a transfer target with interest from Chelsea. He has been sensational in the Jupiler Pro League and could stand in line to take the leap to the top after attracting attention from major European clubs.
The Blues desperately need additions on the left side of the defense following an injury to Ben Chilwell. However, it is unlikely that Gomez will move out in the January transfer window, where Man United are also keeping an eye on his current development. The defender is committed to turning more heads in the future if he continues to develop on this pitch.
Primarily a left-back, the 21-year-old is versatile enough to play as a wing-back and even in advanced positions when needed. He has received the U-21 call for the Spanish youth national team and could stand in line for a senior international match if he continues to perform at a similar level.
Who is Sergio Gomez?
The Spaniard came through the famous La Masia youth academy before being awarded by Borussia Dortmund for his outstanding performances at the youth level. He had a two-year loan spell at Huesca before being sold to the Belgian club in 2021. Gomez has taken the league by storm since then and could become an exciting prospect in the future.
Anderlecht’s young player has played 28 matches this season, while having a huge goal involvement of six goals and 13 assists across all tournaments. He is best known for his attacking skills, and the number of assists he has achieved so far testifies to this claim.
The Spanish full-back is a skilled player on the ball and likes to attack the wide areas of the pitch. With just 21 years, he is also a presence to be reckoned with outside the ball and can be expected to become one of the top left-backs in the country in a club like the Red Devils.
However, a left-back is not a priority for us at the moment as our problems lay elsewhere. The Red Devils must first address the instability in midfield before looking at other goals. Nevertheless, if there is room for us to focus on other areas, then the prospect of picking up the Jupiler Pro League star would be interesting.

Fans would have hoped that Alex Telles after Ralf Rangnick’s arrival could regain the fantastic form he had shown in Porto, but that does not seem to be the case so far. In fact, he was left on the bench in the last couple of games where Luke Shaw started in front of him.
But then again the question arises, why do we need another left-back if a talented player like Telles is already fighting for playing time? This is without regard to the versatile Diogo Dalot, who can do a job as a left-back if required, and Brandon Williams, who is on loan at Norwich City. Adding Gomez would be a wise decision for the future, but there is no immediate need for another back on that side.
