Friday, January 14, 2022, at 21:24 – A winter storm moving through the eastern United States this weekend arrives in Quebec on Monday, bringing widespread snow cover to the province.

We are looking for significant snow over large parts of southern Quebec early next week. A major winter storm affecting the eastern United States will roll up the coast and arrive in Quebec during the day on Monday. A widespread blanket of snow will cover the province at the end of the day, with the highest numbers likely to fall around the national capital region. More about this effective winter storm and the coming week below.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: THE STORM TAKES UP IN THE STATES

The early week’s winter storm heading for Quebec is gathering in the central United States. Winter storm walls stretch for more than 2,000 miles from Mississippi to Maine in anticipation of widespread snow, icebergs and freezing rain along the storm’s path.

This winter storm will escalate rapidly as it reaches the southeastern United States on Saturday, eventually pushing up the east coast over the weekend.

Cold air is firmly locked in place in eastern Canada this weekend. Wind cooling values in Montreal may drop to below -25 on Saturday. This flat of cold air means we get rid of the messy winter mix that so many others have to deal with from this extensive winter storm, and the rainfall should remain completely or mostly snowy in southern Quebec.

MONDAY: SIGNIFICANT SNOW PULLS IN FROM THE SOUTH

A shield of snow from the winter storm will begin to spill over the international border early Monday morning and eventually arrive in Quebec in the late morning hours.

While people over in southern Ontario have to deal with an incredibly difficult weather forecast and a tight cut between significant snow and not much at all, it is a much less uncertain situation in Quebec.

Almost all along and west of St. Lawrence can expect 10-20 inches of snow when the storm lifts away from the area Monday night. Slightly lower snowfall is possible in Eastern Townships, where forecasters expect 5-10 cm of new snow to fall late in the day on Monday.

However, bands of heavier snow will develop just northwest of the center of the storm, which will lead to higher snowfall accumulations in southwestern Quebec around the National Capital Region. Local communities here could see 20-30 cm of snow, with locally higher totals possible.

TUESDAY AND BEYOND: TEMPERATURES FLUCK, BUT STAY COLD

In addition to this winter storm, temperatures will fluctuate slightly during the week in southern Quebec. A brief warm-up comes on Wednesday, bringing high temperatures down to the single-digit temperatures below zero. Colder air will filter in towards the end of the week and return the daytime hours to the double digits below zero – significantly below seasonal in mid-January.

A rock facility could bring yet another opportunity for light snow to the region on Wednesday. Another chance of snow approaching in time for the weekend.
