“The government of the country is now being undermined” by the culture of “survival” in number 10, Shadow Chief Secretary for Treasury Pat McFadden has told Shelagh Fogarty.

It comes as the prime minister hopes to survive the onslaught of public outrage over a steady stream of reports of Downing Street parties taking place under Covid restrictions by revealing “populist” policies in the coming weeks, allegedly dubbed “Operation Red Meat” .

McFadden told Shelagh: “What do you want your government to do? Do you want your government and your prime minister to be solely concerned with their own survival? Or do you want them to address your problems? Your listeners’ problems .

“If you look at what happened last weekend, we were told that there is this ‘Operation Red Meat’ where we will launch an attack on the BBC’s license fee or put the military into the middle of the channel. These things will be done to divert attention from the problems. “

“They are part of a negotiation between the prime minister and the right-wing faction in his party. They are not actually about governing the country,” he continued.
