Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola may be able to afford to experiment a bit with his team as they continue to dominate in this season’s Premier League.
City have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table this afternoon as they take the long trip down to Southampton, where both Liverpool and Chelsea play on Sunday.
After beating Thomas Tuchel’s team last weekend, it seems like the obvious choice to stick with the same XI – though it’s never easy to guess Guardiola.
Nevertheless, here is the city that starts XI Manchester Evening News readers have opted for this afternoon’s match.
Goalkeeper – Ederson
No question. Unless he incurs a late injury in the warm-up, Ederson will be the first name on the team list for Guardiola.
Defenders – Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo
After making the surprising decision to omit Ruben Dias from his line-up against Chelsea, all eyes will be on who Guardiola chooses at the back this afternoon.
John Stones certainly did not put a foot wrong by replacing the Portuguese defender, but it does not come as a big surprise to see Dias return to the side for this afternoon’s match.
Aymeric Laporte gets a nod from fans next to him, which means the Stones have to settle for a spot on the bench.
Elsewhere, Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo have been selected on either side of the defense.
Midfielders – Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva
It is a midfielder who practically chooses himself at this point.
Rodri has excelled in his role of shielding the back four this season, and he will of course retain his place for this afternoon’s match.
After his supreme win against Chelsea, Kevin De Bruyne joined Bernardo Silva right in front of the Spaniard, with Ilkay Gundogan again missing a place in the side.
Attackers – Raheem Stelring, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish
It’s in the front line where the big calls have to be made by Guardiola, where the City boss regularly rotates his forward-looking options.
Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden have almost certainly established themselves as first choice, certainly among the fans, leaving Gabriel Jesus and Jack Grealish to fight for the last remaining spot.
And on this occasion, it is Grealish who gets the nod from the fans after starting the win over Chelsea.
