The county’s police watchdog is investigating after a shooting involving an officer left a man dead in Markham on Friday night.

Around. At 9.15pm, a York police officer on patrol encountered a man outside a vehicle at a shopping mall at Fairburn Drive and Highway 7, according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

There was an interplay and the man was subsequently shot, SIU said.

The man, police say, was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

A woman was arrested at the scene for gun-related offenses. She was not injured.

SIU has invoked its mandate.

Three investigators and two forensic scientists have been charged in the case.
