The US embassy in Kiev, Ukraine, announced on Saturday that part of a $ 200 million “security assistance” package for the Ukrainian military had arrived in the country early that morning.

“The donation, which includes close to 200,000 pounds of lethal security assistance, including ammunition for Ukraine’s frontline defenders, demonstrates the United States’ strong commitment to Ukraine’s sovereign right to self-defense,” the US embassy said in a Facebook post.

The U.S. Embassy noted that over $ 650 million in security assistance had been granted to Ukraine by the United States in the past year, and over $ 2.7 billion since 2014.

“The United States will continue to provide such assistance to support Ukraine’s armed forces in their ongoing efforts to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity against Russian aggression. The announcement comes amid Russian military armaments on the border with Ukraine. Russia has gathered more than 127,000 troops in the region, according to an intelligence report by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, which was shared with CNN earlier this week.

Russia has demanded that Ukraine not become a member of NATO, a demand that the alliance has rejected. In response, the Kremlin has increased its military presence in the region, citing unspecified security concerns.

The United States and other nations are concerned that Russia is preparing for another invasion of the former Soviet Union, just as in 2014, when it invaded Ukraine and annexed the Crimean peninsula.

President Biden made comments this week that received backlash in the United States. During a nearly two-hour-long press conference, the president seemed to suggest that Russia would be treated with less serious consequences if it engaged in a “minor intrusion” into Ukraine.

“It depends on what he does, to what extent we will be able to achieve total unity on the NATO front,” the president said on Wednesday.

“I think what you’re going to see is that Russia will be held accountable if it invades, and that depends on what it does. It’s one thing if it’s a minor burglary, and we end up having to fight over what we should do and not do, ”said Biden.

But the White House and Biden tried to clear up these statements immediately after, emphasizing that any military move by Russia into Ukraine would be considered an invasion.

“President Biden has been aware of the Russian president: if any Russian military forces move across the Ukrainian border, it is a renewed invasion and it will be met with a swift, serious and united response from the United States and our allies.” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement after the press conference.

Biden had previously promised economically destructive sanctions against Russia should it invade Ukraine. Vice President Harris reiterated his feelings during a trial interview with journalist Savannah Guthrie this week.
