A 40-year-old man has been charged with murdering his wife and six-year-old daughter in a stabbing in the suburb of Melbourne.

Victoria Police confirmed on Tuesday that they had charged Prabhal (Raj) Sharma with two counts of murder. They said he remained under police guard at the hospital.

Police allege Sharma stabbed her 39-year-old wife, dental nurse Poonam Sharma, and their six-year-old daughter, Vanessa, in a home on Kellaway Crescent in Mill Park in the northeastern part of Melbourne around 7.50pm on January 13th.

Homicide Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said earlier this month that Mrs. Sharma fled to her neighbor’s house for help, allegedly pursued by her husband. She left blood on the neighbor’s door in her vain search for safety and later died.

Vanessa’s stab wounds were also serious and she died at the hospital. The six-year-old sister, Angela, 10, managed to escape and was physically unharmed.

Neighbor Abdul Husseini said he had been in a nearby park when his wife made him aware of what was going on outside their home while Mrs Sharma screamed and tried to get help along with one of her daughters.

“They cried and called for someone to help – there was no one on the street. The woman came out covered in blood,” he said. “My wife is a little scared now after seeing everything.”

Another neighbor reported seeing a woman covered in blood, crying and calling for help. Others said they heard a loud scream in the street before ambulances arrived.
