Australia’s best beach for 2022 has been named Misery Beach in WA

Bondi may have the glamor, Byron celebrities and Noosa serenity, but a small piece of sand with a bloody past has beaten all three and 19 others to be named Australia’s best beach.

Misery Beach near Albany, WA, was once red with blood from slaughtered sperm whales, but since the closure of Australia’s last whaling station 44 years ago, it has become a safe haven for seals, whales and dolphins.

The 200-meter-long beach five hours southeast of Perth was on Sunday named the country’s best on a list of 20 compiled by Tourism Australia’s beach ambassador Brad Farmer.

In second place came Horseshoe Bay in NSW, with third place to The Spit in Queensland.

South Australia’s Flaherty’s Beach and Loch Ard Gorge in Victoria were named the fourth and fifth best beaches in the country, respectively.

A total of six beaches in NSW were added to the list – more than any other state or territory – including Jervis Bay’s Murray Beach and Sydney’s Congwong Beach.

Tourism Minister Dan Tehan said Mr. Farmer had “one of the toughest jobs in Australia”, which narrowed more than 11,000 candidates to cure a selection of “our most spectacular beaches that will inspire and excite holidaymakers across Australia and the world”.

Tehan urged both local holidaymakers and international tourists to include as many as possible in their travel plans when Australia reopens.

But not everyone agreed on the list.

“There were definitely some curious choices in the top 10,” one person said on Twitter.

“I’ve been to lots of beaches and few on the list are near the best beaches in Australia.

“It seems like it was all based on aesthetics and not usability.”

Others were sad the best beach in Australia was located in WA, which is still closed to the rest of the country.

“So Misery Beach WA has been voted Australia’s best beach,” said social commentator Prue MacSween.

“Well, it will be a misery to try to get there, as the miserable (premier) Mark McGowan wants to keep all tourist attractions a mystery to the rest of the world.”
