Vladimir Putin had barely finished speaking when the first explosions were heard in Kyiv.

In Maidan Square – a symbol of Ukraine’s independence – a series of distant bangs could be heard, followed by a much bigger boom.

If that did not wake Kyiv residents, phone calls and text messages from friends and family did.

Their worst fears had been realized: Russia was launching a major attack on Ukraine.

While many Ukrainians had been preparing for this day, there was still a sense of disbelief that it was happening.

The beautiful, historic and energetic capital of Ukraine was under attack by Russian rockets: Kyiv would never be the same again.

Sirens may have sounded too late

At a hotel in the city center, a barista continued making coffees for customers who were still trying to process the news.
