Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller says Manchester United once tried to sign him and put forward an “insane offer”.
The legendary German attacker recently extended his contract in Munich. The one-club man has racked up over 600 appearances for the Bundesliga champions and earlier this month he penned a 12-month extension.
The new contract will extend the 32-year-old’s association with the club into a 24th year. But he has revealed there were three times when things could have worked out differently.
United have been linked with the attacker on numerous occasions over the years. And Muller has fed such rumors too and in March 2021 he hinted a move could be on the cards.
“I’m not fixed to this club,” he told The Times. “I have a special relationship, I love Bayern before I started playing for them.
“But when there is a situation where you have to decide maybe to play for a different club it would be no shame and no problem at all. Maybe like with Thiago. ”
But it was under Louis van Gaal’s reign when Manchester United came to the table with a huge offer. The Dutchman was charged for two years from May 2014. He was axed just days after United won the FA Cup final.
Muller though says Bayern rejected the deal out of hand in what was a huge statement to the player.
Thomas Muller still has ‘options’
“Bayern clearly rejected the whole thing – despite this insane offer from United.” Muller told Merkur. “[But it was a] huge vote of confidence from Bayern. ”
Hoffenheim were another potential destination for Muller.
“It was relatively close at the time. Luckily, looking back, [Bayern Munich II boss] Hermann Gerland fought back with all his might and prevented the transfer. ”
Muller also considered leaving in Niko Kovac’s reign: “Since I did not get the playing time that I would have liked to have in this phase, I sought a conversation with the club about all the possibilities.”
The Bavarian-born star still says he is open about his future beyond 2024.
“I’ll push that back,” he added. “I feel good about it, do not feel any pressure and have a wide variety of options.”
