Manchester United legends Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham were among those to pay tribute to long-serving receptionist Kath Phipps after she received a special award this week.

The 81-year-old, who joined the Red Devils under legendary manager Sir Matt Busby in 1968, received the League Managers Association’s Service to Football award.

Mrs Phipps was in attendance at a special dinner in London on Tuesday night and collected her award alongside Ferguson and former United midfielder, coach and interim manager Michael Carrick.

She said it was ‘a great honor’ to be recognized by the League Managers Association on Tuesday.

Mrs Phipps told the club’s official website: ‘In September 1968, I just applied for the job to Les Olive and got it within a couple of days,’ said Kath. ‘Sir Alex was my longest-serving manager. He’s always been there for me, every time. He’s absolutely brilliant to work for.

‘I do not think we’ve ever had a cross word all these years I’ve known him. Even on matchdays. We’re like brother and sister – he talks to me like that.

‘I just get up every morning as a happy person. I come here and I just love seeing them all. I’ll miss them one day, when I’m not here, but I do not want to give it up just yet. ‘

In a video message from Miami, Beckham said: ‘I want to send you a message of congratulations for the award tonight. It’s for your services to football but, more importantly, for your services to Manchester United. A club that I love, that you love and many other people love. ‘

He said she used to be ‘the first person I would see when I walked into the training ground reception’ and he would be ‘forever grateful to her’ for dealing with letters from his fans.

Mrs Phipps, who joined Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes as an award winner on the night, said she had ‘a lovely evening’.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson said she was ‘and continues to be a great servant to the club’ and the award was ‘thoroughly deserved’.

Posting a picture of her on Instagram before she received the award, ex-United star Gary Neville said every time he saw her at Old Trafford, ‘it makes me feel more proud to have played for the club’.
