Emergency services have responded to a police shooting on Newlands Road in Coburg North, 11 kilometers north of Melbourne’s CBD.

A 64-year-old Broadmeadows man was shot by police around 4:40 pm and treated by paramedics at the scene.

Police report the man was taken to hospital in a stable condition and that nobody else was injured in the shooting.

While authorities say they are still determining the exact circumstances of the shooting, police have confirmed there is no link between the Coburg North incident and the shooting of a former motorcycle gang member in Fawkner on Saturday.

Police said the man was wanted for questioning in relation to the death of a man in Albanvale on June 25 and was observed driving his vehicle on Monday afternoon along Newlands Road.

It is believed the man saw the police and took off in his vehicle with police in pursuit, before attempting to escape on foot.

Crime Investigation Unit detectives said they were involved in a short foot pursuit with the man.

According to police, the man confronted the detectives with a screwdriver and an officer discharged their firearm, shooting the man.

An investigation by Armed Crime Squad detectives will be overseen by Professional Standards Command, which is the normal procedure when a police firearm is discharged.
