New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell was the leading run-scorer in the series against England.

Daryl Mitchell is on the verge of breaking into the world’s top 10 test batters rankings after his phenomenal series against England.

The Black Caps middle-order batter is now ranked 12th on the ICC men’s test standings after making 538 runs in the three-test series.

Mitchell scored three centuries in six innings, averaging 107.60, despite the world test champions losing the series 3-0.

New Zealand suffered a seven-wicket loss at Headingley as England won the three-test series 3-0.

The 31-year-old, who made his test debut in 2019, has now made four tons in 12 tests for his country and averages 62.73.

He sits behind the Indian duo of Virat Kohli (at 10) and Rishabh Pant (11th) in the rankings, led by England’s Joe Root, who made 396 runs – including two centuries – in their series victory. Team-mate Jonny Bairstow has climbed 20 places in the rankings to be at No.21.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson remains at No.5 after a disappointing series. Williamson scored 96 runs at 24.00 and missed the second test with Covid-19.

Black Caps wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell, who shared in a century partnership in each test with Mitchell while making 383 runs at 76.60, rose 11 places to 20th in the rankings.

England left-arm spinner Jack Leach, who took 10 wickets in the home side’s third-test win this week at Headingley, also climbed to a career-best 25th in the men’s bowling rankings.
