A WA woman has died and a young boy is fighting for life after a horror crash in South Australia.

It is understood the car the woman was driving collided with a logging truck on an outback road around 12.30pm on Friday.

Emergency services were called to Wye, south of Mt Gambier, but the 38-year-old woman died at the scene.

An eight-year-old boy who was sitting in the back of the car suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Mt Gambier before being flown to Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

A 36-year-old man, believed to be in a front passenger seat, had minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital along with a six-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl.

They were sitting in the back of the car.

Police said the truck driver, 58, was not hurt and is assisting investigators with their inquiries.

It is understood the family were on holiday and were driving from Perth to Melbourne.
