Samu lamented he was too winded to celebrate the achievement but was nonetheless pleased to sneak his first five-pointer with a deft bit of footwork close to the line.
“I just gave [halfback] Jake Gordon had a bit of eye contact and he got me the ball, ”Samu said. “I did not really plan to do that, but it sort of worked out and I got through in the end, so it was good.”
Samu is proving himself invaluable to Wallabies selectors with the ability to cover all three positions in the back row. It may mean some extra work on the laptops after dinner when the rest of the side are putting their feet up, but the 30-year-old is not complaining.
“My role is a utility in the back row. Through the week I’ve got to learn all three roles, which is different, but I try and make it easy during the week so the boys starting can back me up if I’m needed there, ”he said.
“There probably isn’t enough computers. I always ask questions and try to get my head around different roles and the boys are pretty good with helping me out around there. ”
The Wallabies have set up camp on the Gold Coast for the remainder of the series and took time out to kick off NAIDOC week celebrations with a welcome to Yugambeh country from elder Luther Cora, on the shores of Tallebudgera Creek. They will don the Indigenous jersey for Saturday’s Test and sing the national anthem in the Yugambeh language.
Playing out the series without Swain is looking like a formality, despite the Wallabies’ intentions to fight the foul play charge on behalf of the 24-year-old Brumbies second-rower.
Even at the low end of the spectrum – Swain’s effort was half-hearted and appeared to start with a sideways shoulder bump – a player can expect a six-week ban. The Wallabies will point to Hill’s extended provocation, which included slapping Swain about the head without provocation in an earlier exchange and pulling at his scalp in a maul in the build-up to the offense.
Nevertheless, the existence of head-on-head contact will make it hard to have the charge thrown out when the hearing convenes on Tuesday evening.
