It did not take long for West Aussies to figure out they had something special in Optus Stadium, but it seems the rest of the world has finally caught on.
The 60,000-seat stadium has taken out the top honor at TheStadiumBusiness Awards held in Manchester, named Venue of the Year.
It was competing against the likes of the Footprint Center in Arizona, home of the Phoenix Suns, Capital One Arena in Washington, which hosts the Washington Capitals in the NHL and the Wizards in the NBA, New York Islanders’ home stadium UBS Arena, as well as SC Freiburg’s Europa-Park Stadion in Germany and the Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade soccer stadium in Senegal.
Optus Stadium was judged on its ability to deliver and grow its business through events and attractions, including adding Stadium Karts and rooftop attractions such as the VERTIGO and HALO tours.
The stadium and its operators were also lauded for their work in September last year, where they hosted six major sporting events in the space of 25 days.
On September 3, they held an AFL semifinal between Geelong and Greater Western Sydney before rearranging the ground for a Bledisloe Cup tie.
They then pulled off an AFL preliminary final, Brownlow Medal count, AFL grand final open training session and the grand final in the space of 15 days.
Acting Sport and Recreation Minister Bill Johnston said he was thrilled to see the Burswood-based stadium given due reward.
“We have known for a long time that Optus Stadium is truly a spectacular facility, but it is wonderful to see the rest of the world recognize that too,” Johnston said.
“This award belongs to the thousands of people who work at the stadium and those who support its operations. From those who work in the kitchens, to maintaining the turf, to driving the buses and trains and everyone who has worked so hard behind the scenes to produce this truly world-class result. ”
Construction began on the venue in December 2013, and it officially opened on January 21, 2018.
Optus Stadium was previously voted the Most Beautiful Sports Facility in the World in the Prix Versailles 2019 international architecture awards.
